How the GEC Helps Our Community |
|
|
|
|
| Community Organizing |
Community organizing and education led to the signs being
reposted at the Brunswick Wood Preserving Superfund Site, and fences
repaired to keep children and all terrain vehicles out. Recently,
monitoring wells were installed between the Site and residential wells. |

 |
|
|
|
| Technical Assistance |
The GEC provides technical assistance
to those living around our four Superfund Sites as we recover from our
toxic legacy. |

| Public Hearings |
The GEC helps our community by requesting public hearing
for projects like the Live Oak Power Plant, where many of the people
living close by are worried that large water withdrawals from the Miocene
aquifer by the power plant could make more wells go dry.

|
Our 12 year struggle for clean healthy air resulted in public hearings
on air permits being issued in our community. |

| Safe and Healthy Schools |
The GEC worked to implement an Integrated
Pest Management program in Glynn County Schools. We also helped
arrange and fund testing of certain school properties for contamination,
resulting in eventual
clean-up of Goodyear Elementary School. We are currently
working to have Altama Elementary School
re-tested for toxaphene degradation products and other chemicals.
