Seafood Consumption Advisory Area
- As Glynn County is a fishing community, guidelines for safe consumption of our oceans’ harvest are in the public health interest of everyone. Knowledge of safe harvestable species as well as locations of safe harvesting areas is essential to the health of our families as well as maintenance of a healthy commercial fishing industry.  A copy of the full color flier about catching, preparing and eating fish in Glynn County,  English or Spanish.

Mercury Hair Testing - Women in their childbearing years are often bombarded with confusing messages about mercury. That's why the University of Georgia Marine Extension Service created a hair mercury testing program that provides simple and affordable screening for women of childbearing age. How Our Kids IQ are Hurt (Mercury, PCBs, and others) Most hazards can be avoided, but knowing where they are is key. "Little Things Matter" This 7 minute video explains what you can do to protect you and your family.

Safe and Healthy Schools

The GEC worked to implement an Integrated Pest Management program in Glynn County Schools.  We also helped arrange and fund testing of certain school properties for contamination, resulting in eventual clean-up of Goodyear Elementary School.  We are currently working to have Altama Elementary School re-tested for toxaphene degradation products and other chemicals.

Mussels of the Altamaha River - A course designed to teach ecological relationships and habitat use patterns using the mussels of the Altamaha River to show the interdependence of species for reproduction, transportation, and food. Objectives include discussion of the interdependence of all life within a watershed.

Diamond Back Terrapin - The Diamondback terrapin is a salt marsh turtle commonly found throughout coastal Georgia.  In the summer months, May through the end of July, female terrapins venture to the causeways in search of high grounds on which to lay their eggs.  Unfortunately many are hit by cars.  However, you can prevent this!
